MOST MEDICAID DOLLARS GO TO HEALTH INSURERS

According to a new report by Health Management Associates, states and the federal government paid health insurance companies over $307 billion in 2018 to run Medicaid programs. That amounts to 52% of total Medicaid spending up from 2007, when it was just 20%

Overall: This shift is happening and will continue to happen because more states are privatizing their Medicaid programs because the Affordable Care Act expanded Medicaid eligibility to more low-income people.
