SCHOOL NURSES DEEPLY NEEDED, BUT OFTEN MISSING

According to a report by USA Today, roughly 25% of schools across the country have no nurse on staff while 40% only have a part time nurse.

As one parent leader in Manhattan’s Upper West Side told the Wall Street Journal last year in a report that found New York City is undergoing the worst school nurse shortage in 15 years, if students “don’t have access to a trained medical professional, and something happens, we could be looking at a catastrophe.”

What it all Means: School nurses provide an invaluable resource to students dealing with a variety of issues including allergies to those with suicidal thoughts. Over time their jobs have become increasingly difficult.
