SOLERA HEALTH RAISES $42 MILLION USD

Several Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) plans and the VC arm of Health Care Service Corp — a Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) licensee — poured $42 million USD into Solera Health, a company offering tech solutions that tackle social determinants of health (SDOH).

Why this matters: This isn’t BCBS’ first commitment to the SDOH-focused firm: BCBS teamed up with Solera in March to leverage the startup’s platform to connect BCBS members to relevant community resources. A host of health insurers work to tackle social barriers to healthcare to help stave off some of the steep costs associated with SDOH:

Final Word: Expect insurer-led initiatives addressing SDOH to tick up this year — and it’s likely more insurers will be flexing their VC muscles by pumping cash into startups undertaking SDOH.
