The US Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) is joining forces with digital therapeutics startup Virta Health to make Virta’s type 2 diabetes treatment available to veterans. The VA and Virta will kick off a pilot program that enrolls 400 veterans in Virta’s digitally delivered, drug- and surgery-free solution that aims to reverse type 2 diabetes progression by focusing on dietary intake.

Why this matters: It makes sense for the VA to add tech that could abate diabetes to its growing list of telehealth investments, considering veterans are disproportionately affected by the diabetes epidemic, which costs the VA $1.5 billion annually to treat: 25% of veterans have a diabetes diagnosis, compared with 10% of the general US adult population, per the CDC.
