BCBS OF MASSACHUSETTS BRINGS PILLPACK TO ITS MEMBERS

Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Massachusetts announced this week it’s integrating with Amazon’s e-pharmacy PillPack, and the insurer will allow eligible members to switch to PillPack directly from their Blue Cross MyBlue app or the corresponding MyBlue website. We’ve known for several months that Amazon was pursuing BCBS as a potential partner, though this announcement remains notable, as BCBS Massachusetts claims it’s the first health plan to offer this level of digital integration with PillPack as a service to members. If more health plans start integrating directly with PillPack, that could help shake up the deeply intrenched PBM market responsible for negotiating medication prices between payers and pharmacies — a $423 billion industry that Amazon seems keen on disrupting, according to court documents revealed in June as part of a dispute between PillPack and CVS.
